Due to their specialist nature, Gavin Haynes, managing director of Whitechurch Securities, believes single theme funds should only form a small part of a well-diversified portfolio, no more than 10%.
Whether niche or broad, themes can require patience. ‘As thematic investing is based on conceptual thought, investment themes are generally forward-looking and usually require a long-term approach to see the theme succeed,’ adds Haynes. ‘The thematic investor can be looking at their identified theme reaching maturity anywhere over a five, 10 or 20 year cycle.’
