Bear in mind that the above calculation uses middle prices and does not account for bid/offer spreads or dealing charges – however, it also shows only capital growth and does not account for dividend payments either.
STAR covers just over 300 of the largest UK quoted companies, and therefore uses the FTSE All Share Index for comparison. Performance is determined in reference to a hypothetical portfolio in which an investment is split equally across all of the relevant Buy signals (i.e. Growth 10, Growth 20, Income 10 and Income 20) in January of a given year. These hypothetical positions are then held throughout the year until a Sell signal is issued, at which point the relevant hypothetical positions are closed and the proceeds re-invested based on the top Buy signals from the same issue (but following the standard sector diversification rule).
At the end of the year (which is considered to run to the next January STAR issue) the hypothetical portfolio is rebalanced across the current set Buy signals. All prices are taken as the middle closing price on the day before STAR is issued, and no trading charges are considered.
Using this system and the Growth 10 hypothetical portfolio as an example, on a discrete annual basis STAR has been shown to significantly outperform the FTSE All Share Index in 18 out of the last 23 years (1986 to 2008), as shown in the figure above.
The simulated growth following the STAR system from the January 1999 STAR issue is shown below, updated to the July 2009 issue and compared to the FTSE All Share Index over this period.
